How to prevent allergy triggers in your home

Allergy season is just around the corner as the cold weather begins to heats up and the snow from winter thaws out. During the spring, and continuing into summer, allergy triggers such as dust and pollen are more likely to spread. Preventing these triggers from building up in your household is a great way to reduce your likely hood of suffering seasonal allergies.

So what are some of the immediate ways in which you can reduce triggers? At AFC Urgent Care Malden, we’ve put together a need-to-know list of tips for preventing seasonal allergies this spring!

Make changes in your home to help address allergens

Household changes such as improving cleanliness and actively dusting can help reduce the prevalence of allergens in the household. A couple of changes that can reduce allergens and decrease the chance of seasonal allergy irritation include:

  • Shutting windows and not leaving them open as much to reduce the spread of allergens
  • Take your shoes off at the door and ask guests to do similar things
  • Frequently vacuum floors and dust surfaces to help reduce allergy triggers
  • Use cleaner or disinfectant on surfaces and countertops to help
  • Use hypoallergenic bedding and other types of sheets to reduce allergen

These changes are important to reduce allergy triggers in the household. Individuals with seasonal allergy risks and asthma are likely to benefit from these changes in the form of lower symptoms.

Take allergy relief medication ASAP

The earlier you take allergy relief medication, the more likely you’ll be able to stave off uncomfortable allergy symptoms.

Before using any medication, whether it is prescribed or over-the-counter, make sure to consult your primary care provider before using any medication. When you are approved to use medication use it as early as possible to prevent common allergens for spreading.
